Bahçeşehir University "Timber Is Future: Design and Build" Student Competition Concluded
The "Timber Is Future: Design and Build" Student Competition, jointly organized by the BAU Timber Structures Application and Research Center and the BAU Faculty of Architecture and Design, has concluded.
The competition invited students of Architecture, Industrial Design, and Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at the BAU Faculty of Architecture and Design to explore the potential and advantages of timber, the only building material from a renewable source, as a construction material.
The two key words of the competition are "timber" and "upcycling." Laminated timber and cross-laminated timber previously used in the construction of a building will be used as the design material in the competition. For this reason, participating students first sought an answer to the question "Why upcycling?" and, once the answer turned out to be "timber," the process began. One of the ways to reduce our negative impact on the planet is to consume responsibly and to consider the circularity of all materials consumed. Among all building materials, timber is the most suitable for upcycling. Shaped by this main framework, the competition started with the competition announcement made on 8 October 2024. All details were shared on the web page created for the competition, and a seminar was held on Saturday, 19 October, to develop participants' knowledge of timber. As part of the seminar, Demet Sürücü, Deputy Director of the BAU Timber Structures Application and Research Center and Forest Industry Engineer (MSc), gave an in-depth presentation titled "Timber Is a Construction Material" on timber structures, their applications, sustainability and functionality. This was followed by Civil Engineer (MSc) Ömer Asım Şişman, who provided information on basic timber statics and connections under the title "Design Criteria for Timber Structures." As part of the competition, Architect Özgül Öztürk also gave a presentation titled "Design for the Future" on creating nature-compatible designs for the future by using architecture as a tool for sustainability and sustainable development. Through the workshop organized as part of the competition, participants had the chance to develop their design concepts, explore the processing and integration of timber, and develop innovative approaches in the design process. The seminar and workshop aimed to help participants learn the basic principles for increasing the structural integrity of their designs.
The competition jury members, Ahmet Topbaş (Founder of ATTEC, Civil Engineer), Boğaçhan Dünderalp (Founder of DDRLP Architecture, Architect), Doğaç Toy (Interior Architect and Environmental Designer at PBD), Murat Dündar (Prof. Dr., Dean of the BAU Faculty of Architecture and Design), Nusret Uşun (Architect at Teğet Architecture Office) and Özgül Öztürk (Founding Architect of Circular Design), along with the competition rapporteurs Research Assistant Ayşe Eda Adıgüzel (BAU Faculty of Architecture and Design), Research Assistant Beril Gök (BAU Interior Architecture and Environmental Design) and Assist. Prof. Dr. Handan Temeltaş (BAU Industrial Design), met at the BAU Faculty of Architecture and Design on Tuesday, 10 December 2024, and evaluated the submitted projects in line with the competition theme and the expectations set out in the specifications. As a result of the jury evaluation, the award-winning teams are listed below:
1st Prize (Code: 30046)
• Abdurrahman Semma
• İbrahim Emir Kımıl
• Inas Ouertani
• Nurseli Azra Özlü
• Yasmine Saleh

2nd Prize (Code: 20522)
• Sıla Ercan
• Umid Akhundlu
3rd Prize (Code: 51255)
• Mhd Hmam Al Zoubi
• Yasmeen Mahmoud
The awards were presented to their winners at the Award Ceremony held at the BAU North Lounge on Friday, 20 December 2024.

The first-prize design will be produced at 1/1 scale during the spring semester with the support of competition participants and volunteer students, and will take its place in the garden of the BAU North Campus. In this way, the "Timber Is Future: Design and Build" competition will fulfill its slogan: after "design" comes "build"... "build with timber."
The competition organizing team consists of Demet Sürücü, Göksun Akyürek Altürk, Pınar Şahin, Zeynep Gül Söhmen Tunay and Ayşe Eda Adıgüzel.
Competition sponsors: 1st Prize (30,000 TL, Alba AŞ.), 2nd Prize (20,000 TL, Hemel AŞ.), 3rd Prize (15,000 TL, Rothoblaas Türkiye). Timbertech, an Italy-based design and structural analysis software company used in timber construction, also gifted licensed software to the students who placed in the top three.
For the construction of the first-prize design, the sponsor of the laminated timber and cross-laminated timber is Hasslacher Group (Austria), the sponsor of the connection elements is Rothoblaas, and the sponsor of the wood preservative paint and impregnation material is Hemel AŞ. The construction sponsor is PBd Ahşap Ltd. Şti.
The interest and design skills of young designers in designing and building with timber have given rise to new hope. As the most important building material of today and the near future, timber will continue, together with young designers, to contribute to building livable cities and protecting the planet. With our thanks to the competition organizing team, the participants, our jury members and all our sponsors... and hoping to be together during the construction process.
